Avella Expands Use of Innovative Technology Tool to Increase Patient Adherence
GlowCap® pilot program offering is expanded to additional oncology patients
Avella Wholesale, an affiliate of Avella Specialty Pharmacy, today announced the expansion of its GlowCap® pilot program designed to assist patients in taking their medication on time and on schedule. A medical adherence aid, GlowCap is a wireless prescription bottle cap equipped with a tool that reminds patients to take their medication through sound and light signals.
Avella is expanding its program to patients taking Novartis Pharmaceutical oncology products for certain FDA approved indications. Avella is currently the single source of integrated GlowCap support programs for Novartis oncology products.
Avella first distributed the GlowCap system to patients last year through a partnership with pharmaceutical manufacturer Novartis and GlowCap manufacturer; Vitality. The expanded program will also include GlowPack™, a pouch that can hold oral medication packaged in blister packs. The GlowPack provides the same visual and audible reminders at dosage time.
“Medical adherence continues to be a challenge for many patients,” said Eric Sredzinski, Pharm D. Vice President, Clinical Affairs. “At Avella we are committed to identifying innovative, proactive tools to keep patients on their medications and ensure the best possible medical outcomes. The Novartis pilot program has been successful to date and has received positive response from patients and providers. We are pleased to see statistically significant improvement in adherence rates for participating patients.”
GlowCap and GlowPack are provided free of charge by Novartis to patients who qualify and opt-in to the clinical support program at Avella. Both tools alert patients about dosage time with glowing and ringing functions. If a dose is not administered within two hours of the notification, the patient will receive a recorded reminder via telephone. If both methods fail to make the patient compliant, a pharmacist will personally call the patient to determine the adherence challenge.
“Specialty pharmacists play a key role in monitoring medication adherence and ensuring correct usage of their medications,” said Sredzinski. “The GlowCap technology is another way for us to optimize patient health and support our healthcare provider customers in that process.”
